When It Is Time to Quit
By Joe Trevison
Watching the movie "We Were the Mulvaneys" started me to thinking about business. It starred Beau Bridges as the father. He has a successful businessman but his beautiful loving daughter is raped. Mr. Mulvaney cannot get his daughter to testify against her rapist. He cannot look at her and sends her away to a distant relative. He has a successful roofing company but because of the rape, the rapist's father destroyed the business.
What could Mr. Mulvaney have done instead of going to drink and ruin? Let's look at one of Napoleon Hill's 17 Principles, "Learning from Adversity and Defeat. This principle tells us hardship and adversity are a common language of nature in which she speaks to all living creatures and teaches them many things they would not learn in any other way. However, I am not minimizing rape. Rape is always wrong. That is the end of that thought.
But we are talking about business. He could have accepted his daughter's decision. Boy, do I know that from life.
1.He could have gone to another business that the rapist's dad could not affect.
2.He could have moved his business to a different location where this creep of a father had no power.
This is what Hill's philosophy is all about! Email me and I will give you the whole 17 principles with exercises so you can make them part of your life.
Years ago I read a newsletter from a guru who had the same situation. He wrote these lines on September 30, 1991.
THINK ABOUT QUITTING!
"I was teaching at a Jay Abraham seminar when a certain man and his partners came to the stage for their "hot seat." They were in the business of building and selling single-family homes in a suburban town on the outskirts of Chicago. Unfortunately, Sears was the biggest employer in the town and Sears was pulling out. Therefore, 70% of all homes in that town were up for sale and there were no buyers. I told these people their game was over. They had to go to another business or move their existing businesses to another city."
"They left the seminar. They didn't have to travel 2,000 miles and pay thousands of dollars to hear some dork tell them it was time to fold their tents."
This Guru was right. There are times you have to leave a business, or change the business or move the business. If you do not do this, it will be a costly affair for you.
I hope I helped you with this newsletter.
