"Items my Associates and I talk about".
By: Joe Trevison, CPA/MBA

My associate John Kraus and I were walking to my car. He was carrying the computer he had just fixed for me. We started to talk about buying rights. John had seen the rights the Guru Matthew Lesko had for $500. At this time he had very small knowledge about people buying these rights. We talked about this and knew it is better to have your own products.

So after I got home I emailed this letter to John:

Anyway, you're right about exclusive rights. You should never have to pay for them because you are doing all the work of selling.

The late E. Joseph Cossman was an expert in business. He only created two of his products the other 18 were exclusive rights, which he did not pay for.

For example, in a factory he found the Spud Gun which shot potatoes. The owners could never sell it. They gave him the plans and samples for $500. He found Fly Cake that killed flies in a classified ad. The owner just sold them through classifieds. Cossman got the rights to sell them through all other avenues of selling. He paid royalties for the use as he sold the fly cakes.

This is the only way to do it. Never pay upfront or pay others for products. I told you the story of me trying, in the past, to get a book that had a great chapter on classifieds ads and garage sales. The son who now owns it wanted $15,000 upfront. The book is still sitting on his shelf I bet.

I researched the same subject and wrote a book on the chapter I wanted from him.

One other guru said to pay up to $250. I agree with Cossman, no upfront money. And it is probably as you suggest just create our own products. You are a hell of a programmer. I know the business forms that can be made into programs. Also, we have all the Rabat books to do many other programs.

You and I should study them in detail for ideas.

And there are patents that are in public domain, toys and things that we could change and patent. A patent is good for only 17 years. So there is a lot of stuff.

Sunday I plan to get Jim and go to the library and review some of these old patents for ideas.

Note: Rabat is the owner of the school John and I once worked for. These were books he bought for the students to use: Teaching Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Peachtree, and others programs.

Next Month’s issue:
November: Plan # 1 for products for you to own.
