In E. Joseph Cossman’s wonderful book, "How I Made $1,000,000 in Mail Order (And You Can Too)” he reports that the Government has royalty-free patents. These patents are also a non-exclusive basis. Mr. Cossman tells of how he knew of a man who picked up one of these patents for a toy and made a fortune. The publication he used is the "Official Gazette, a weekly publication of the United States Patent Office.
These abstracts give you abstracts of the invention. If you are interested and want to use the patent, you can contact The Commissioner of Patents, Washington D.C. You may have to pay a little for the patent being printed for you, but the invention is free for you to produce and sell.
I live in a small town and our library has this publication. Check with your library for the availability in your area.
My son and I went to our library on July 20, 2004. We reviewed patents dated from the 1950’s. Since patents are good for only 17 years all these items we found were expired. So that means we could produce and sell anything we found. Actually we found 4 that we are interested in. My next step was to find the address of the patent office to get our patent. I found it on the net and wrote them a letter requesting several things:
1. If I could now use and produce the patent because they were expired.
2. The cost of printing and getting the whole patent to review.
Maybe we could do some joint ventures on this. What do you think? Give me a call
or e-mail me. My business phone is 814-456-2601 and my e-mail is: Joetrevis@aol.com
I know 29 ways to sell these items. SCM that advertises on TV has only 10.
Next Month’s December Issue:
Part II of this series and you also see a copy of any e-mails I get from the patent office.
P.S I have a great gift for sale for a child 9 to 99. It is something the parent will play with too.
