“How to Send Direct Mail to Clients Effectively”

By Joe Trevison

I have put this on several forums and I got no replies:

Do any of you use direct mail? Where do you get your names?

2. How many times do you mail to your lists?

3. What is the interval of mailing?

A. Every week

B. Every Month

4. How many weeks or months do you mail before you give up?

Did any of you try those ones that are very cheap sold in ad magazines at the newsstand?

I titled it “direct mail.”

I titled another: “How Many Times Do You Send a Sales Letter?”

I got this one answer:

It depends on what you are trying to sell. If you have new stuff to market to a current client, then option 3 is the way to go. If you are trying to get to a maybe interested prospect, option 3 will also work.

I know that it takes at least seven tries for a prospect to answer. So keep on calling them. Keep on mailing them. Persistence is important for success.

Good luck.

I once heard 12 times. I don’t really know the answer. I made the mistake of stopping after one. I know that was stupid. But you have to do another letter and that takes time etc.

The reason I probably did not get an answer with direct mail, is that people on the net do not use direct mail. I think that is stupid. It could be another great source of good income. And I really don’t know if anyone is making a lot of money just from the Internet. I know many people that tried and failed, only using the Internet.

One of the richest I know is a kid in my building with a hot silk-screening business. He has a web site but makes his money from the people in the city he and I live. He knows little about business but because of the relationships and referrals, his business is booming.

I am envious I can tell you that. I would love to have this business too. I am working on it with an associate.

Just as I wrote this on September 9, I got an answer to the first posting from someone in the know.

Here is what he wrote:

Hi Joe,

I have been doing direct mail marketing for 35+ years. The best sources of lists are my own customers. Most marketers could double or triple their sales and profits if they would simply mail MORE to their client/customer list.

I have letters in the mail daily. Of course, there are special promotions I do which go out at other times. I never stop mailing buyers. Leads... I usually mail to them monthly for six months at intervals and then once or twice a year after that.

DO NOT use the "cheap" lists you see in the Biz Opp magazines. Check out the SRDS for lists of buyers. You can usually get a copy in larger libraries. Also online at: www.srds.com. What you want to look for is frequency of purchase, amount of purchase, and type of product ordered.

Hope this helps.

I have no idea who Michael is but I like and believe his answer. So we did get the answer. Now you have it. It can be another source of income for you.
