E. Haldeman Julius set out to make a scientific study of the book buying habits of the 1920's. All his books looked alike. All the same size. All the same color. And all the same price...5 cents.

"Nothing like it has ever been written", said Gary Halbert.

At the end of the study, he had 2,176 titles for sale in his catalog. A reader had to buy 20 books at a time, which he did by circling numbers on an order form and mailing it in with his payment.

He made all the books the same because he wanted to study the titles. The only difference in the books visually, was the title. That eliminated people that buy books because they are pretty and look nice on the shelf, and the ones who buy a book because somebody thinks they should have a copy in their home...like a Bible, for instance.

The books were called "The Little Blue Books" because they were all blue and 3" x 5", which fit into pockets. He sent his catalog out in the mail, offering from 50 to 200 titles at a time. In this way he was able to discover exactly which titles were the most popular, and which words would work to sell the books.
